Brent Faiyaz’s latest release Icon is a major success. The album made it into the Top 10 of the Billboard charts. The singer is once again showing us how much the music industry has changed over the past few years. Brent chose to stay independent and releases music under his own label, ISO Supremacy. There is clearly no need to have a big label behind your music these days — artists are proving that independence is the way to go.

The album is packed with his trademark sound: moody, atmospheric R&B with introspective lyrics about relationships, fame, and vulnerability. There is, however, one track that stands out among the others. Halfway through the project we are surprised by the more pop- and disco-sounding song ‘other side.’. It immediately demands our attention and has us tapping our feet.

For the song, Brent Faiyaz went into the studio with producer Benny Blanco. This right away explains why the track is such an excellent blend of commercial pop and R&B. We remember the days when songs like this were dominating the charts. We couldn’t be happier to hear the singer taking a shot at this sound as well. ‘other side.’ serves as one of the record’s most atmospheric and emotionally resonant moments.
